A Closer Look at How I Practice Medicine
Last weekend, I attended a class on nature-based medicine rooted in ancient Chinese medical texts. At its heart is a simple but profound idea: we are not separate from nature…we are nature.
The invitation is to observe the patterns around us, the constellations, the trees, the movement of birds and begin to recognize those same patterns within ourselves.
Since then, I’ve been reflecting on my role as an acupuncturist and an alchemical detective, in relationship with my clients, with nature, and with the cosmos.
Here’s what that looks like in practice:
First - creating a safe container for healing. This means ensuring that each person feels seen, heard, and respected, wherever they are in their process.
Second - exploring patterns of thought, body, and spirit, that may be looping or stuck.
Third - introducing tools that open new pathways of awareness: storytelling about the history of a point or meridian, engaging the imagination, and working with the breath.
And finally, the physical tools themselves, needles, essential oils, and moxibustion.
All of these are part of the treatment. Together, they help restore the unobstructed flow of the rivers within us. They move qi, support balance, and ultimately reconnect us with our innate capacity to heal.
Take a moment to notice what patterns are asking for your attention right now. In your body, your thoughts, or your energy.
Step outside and spend a little time with something living, a tree, the sky, the movement of water, even the rhythm of your own breath. Notice what mirrors back to you. Notice what shifts.
And if you’d ever like to explore what you find, you’re always welcome to bring it into the treatment room.
