I recently spent a few days in the Hudson Valley, a place I visited often while living in New York. As we drove the familiar roads, passed old farm stands, and spotted favorite swimming holes, I noticed something almost immediately. Memories from years past came flooding back. I smiled and sank a little deeper into my seat.
Comfort. Safety. Home.
It made me think about the medicine of familiarity. Certain places, scents, sounds, and rituals have a way of reminding the body that it can soften. Before the mind has time to tell the story, the body simply recognizes what it knows.
In Alchemical Acupuncture, we often speak about returning to our original nature. Not by going backward, but by remembering the deep sense of ease and wholeness that has always been available beneath the layers of stress, busyness, and striving. Sometimes healing begins with a simple moment of recognition.
Some of the things that bring me back to that feeling are:
Vetiver essential oil
Lighting a particular chrysanthemum incense I've used since acupuncture school
The scent of wildflowers in a field
The mix of ocean air, warm sand and just a hint o sunblock
What about you? Is there a place, a scent, a song, or a simple ritual that instantly brings you back to yourself?
At times all it takes is a familiar path, a remembered view, or something that has quietly held us before. Ease isn't always something we have to create. Sometimes it's simply something we remember.
