A few months ago, a patient came to see me because she couldn’t stop clenching her jaw. Nothing catastrophic had happened. But her teenage son was pulling away. Work felt uncertain. She was waking at 3am, rehearsing conversations that hadn’t even occurred.
“I know this isn’t a tragedy,” she said. “So why does it feel so heavy?”
Hardship isn’t only dramatic loss. Sometimes it’s the quiet strain of loving someone and trusting their unfolding path. The tension of uncertainty. The ache of transition.
That’s human.
Suffering begins when the body locks around it.
The Wood element was tight - frustration with nowhere to go.
The Water element was unsettled - fear about the future.
The Metal element couldn’t release - the same thoughts looping at night.
Her jaw was simply bracing for a future that hadn’t happened.
Through acupuncture, we focused on creating movement. Her sleep deepened. Her jaw softened. A few weeks later she smiled and said, “My son is still being a teenager… but I’m not bracing all the time.
”Her life didn’t radically change.
Her nervous system did.
That is the difference between hardship and suffering.
We can’t prevent life’s seasons.
We can support your body so it doesn’t have to fight them.
If you’ve been clenching, holding your breath, or carrying a quiet heaviness, this may be your sign to come in.
You don’t have to brace your way through.
Suffering is optional.
